Eritreum melakeghebrekristosi is an extinct species of elephants that lived in northeast Africa during the late Paleogene, and could be the missing link between modern elephants and their ancestors. The fossils of this species is the oldest known fossil featuring the horizontal tooth displacement found in modern elephants. The species is estimated to have been 1,067 pounds heavy and about 4.2 feet tall at the shoulder, much smaller than modern elephants.
